All about hydrogen for Canberra businesses
40-KWh to MWh H2 batteries, secure backup power for business. Supply & repair fuel cells & electrolysers in the Canberra region & South Eastern NSW. Canberra commercial hydrogen batteries.
Hydrogen batteries are very cost-effective as a commercial energy storage system. With systems ranging from 40kWh and into MWh of storage, they provide a reliable source of electrical power for days without recharging. They also have a long life and are recyclable.
What are hydrogen batteries used for in commercial applications?
Hydrogen batteries are suitable for
- Data centres
- Defence
- First responders
- Hospitality
- Medical
- Mining
- Mobility
- Security
- Telecommunications
- And any other industry or process that requires a clean, secure, reliable source of energy and backup power.
You can use solar PV, wind turbines or spinning reserve to charge a hydrogen battery – the same way you would charge a Li-ion battery.
How do hydrogen batteries compare to Li-ion Batteries (BESS)?
When compared to a typical Li-ion battery, a hydrogen battery has a higher CapEx, but:
- Has 3-4 times the life cycles,
- Is recyclable and creates significantly less toxic E-waste at the end of the battery life,
- Can store significantly more energy,
- Costs significantly less to increase the storage capacity (doubling the storage capacity of a BESS will double the price. Doubling the storage capacity of a hydrogen battery system will only cost a small fraction of the cost of the original system),
- Does not require constant recharging, even when not in use (A BESS requires an additional generation system to maintain charge. A hydrogen battery can store energy for hundreds of years, even when not in use),
- Will work in a much wider range of temperatures.
How does a commercial hydrogen battery work?
A commercial hydrogen battery consists of an electrolyser that uses electricity to split water into H2 and O2. The H2 is stored in a canister or in high-strength cylinders. When electricity is required for your business, the H2 is recombined with O2 in a hydrogen fuel cell. In the fuel cell, the protons from the hydrogen pass through a membrane to the oxygen and the electrons pass around to the other side of the membrane through a conductive circuit. This creates an electrical current, heat, and water.
