All about hydrogen for the home
H2Homes is a pioneer in the installation and servicing of domestic renewable hydrogen systems. Before you decide to buy a Li-ion battery or a lead acid battery for your home talk to us and checkout the LAVO Hydrogen Battery System – https://lavo.com.au/
What are the benefits of hydrogen system for your home?
Higher energy storage capacity
A home hydrogen battery like the LAVO, can store enough hydrogen to produce 40kWw of electricity. This is enough to last an average household, in Australia, two days, and is three to four times the amount of electricity that can be stored in a typical domestic Lithium-Ion battery.
When storing H2 in a cylinder, there are no limits to the amount of hydrogen storage capacity that can be added to a hydrogen battery. The cost of adding more storage capacity is extremely low when compared to adding the same storage capacity to a Li-ion home battery
Longer life
Hydrogen batteries typically have three to four times the lifecycles of normal Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The hydrogen produced from water electrolysis is stored by combining it with a metal hydride, in special canisters, or as a gas in pressurised cylinders, where there is very little degradation like in a typical BESS.
LAVO claim 20,000 life cycles for its metal hydride storage cannisters.
Friendly to the Environment
When coupled to a roof top solar PV system, or small wind turbine, all of the hydrogen produced by the hydrogen battery is deemed as a renewable source of energy and is typically called green hydrogen. The only by-products of producing hydrogen from water electrolysis and using hydrogen in fuel cells are water and heat. Unlike a typical Li-ion and lead acid BESS, there is very little in the way of polluting E-waste at the end of hydrogen battery’s’ life. Significantly fewer emissions are generated in the production of fuel cells when compared to Li-ion batteries (Cradle to gate).
Very low cost of adding additional storage capacity
When storing hydrogen as a gas in a cylinder, the cost of adding more storage capacity is extremely low when compared to adding the same capacity to a Li-ion BESS. There are no limits to the amount of storage capacity that can be added to a hydrogen battery.
No loss of charge
Unlike a typical BESS that continually loses charge even when not in use, a hydrogen battery loses no charge. PICEA claims, “If you have a full storage tank from us, it takes 300 years for 1% of the storage volume to be lost.”
Hydrogen Batteries Are Safe
Hydrogen Gas H2, has a 3rd of the energy of natural gas per Nm3. H2 is 14 times lighter than air and hydrogen molecules will combine with other molecules very quickly when exposed to air. In the event of a leak, this means hydrogen will dissipate rapidly. For extra safety most hydrogen batteries are designed to be installed outdoors.
Will Operate In A Wide Range Of Temperatures
Where reliable backup power is critical, hydrogen batteries will work in a wide range of temperatures from – 45°C to + 50°C
Reliability
Hydrogen batteries are 99.99% reliable.
Also Ideal For Rural And Remote Locations
Hydrogen batteries in rural and remote locations are ideal. Hydrogen battery systems can cost less than poles and wires or buried cables. They cost less than diesel generators and other battery energy storage systems over their lifetime. Hydrogen can be produced on site or imported. Hydrogen batteries are quiet and can be completely discharged and recharged. Hydrogen batteries typically store three to four times more energy than other battery systems and are not dependant on fuel imports.
An Asset To Any Home
Designed to last 30 years the LAVO hydrogen battery system has 20,000 cycles of charging and supplying power. When combined with renewable energy any hydrogen battery will help reduce your energy costs, and will be viewed as an asset that will impress most potential buyers.
