What are the benefits of a hydrogen system for your business?
Energy security
Suitable to any business or location that requires energy security, a Commercial Hydrogen Battery can provide a secure source of green energy. Integrated with solar PV, wind power or spinning reserve, a Commercial Hydrogen Battery can deliver the critical energy you need long after the sun has set, and the wind has stopped blowing. And because you are producing fuel onsite, there is little need to rely on deliveries of diesel for the most remote locations.
Protection from outages
A Commercial Hydrogen Battery can provide backup power. In the event of a power outage, a Commercial Hydrogen Battery allows you to remain working or trading when other businesses cannot. This is good for your business and your customers.
Higher energy storage capacity
There is no limit on how much H2 you can store. A single hydrogen battery like the LAVO, can store enough hydrogen gas to produce 40kWh of electricity. This is three times the amount of electricity that can be stored in a typical domestic Lithium-Ion battery. If you need more power, simply add another LAVO.
There is no limit to storage capacity, the size or applications for hydrogen batteries or backup power solutions. Megawatt capacity is already achievable at lower costs than Li-ion batteries and lead acid batteries.
Longer life
Hydrogen batteries typically have three to four times the lifecycles of other common Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The hydrogen produced from water electrolysis is stored by combining it with a metal hydride, in special cannisters, or as a gas in pressurised cylinders, where there is very little degradation that occurs in a typical BESS.
LAVO claim 20,000 lifecycles for its metal hydride storage cannisters.
No loss of charge
Unlike a typical BESS that continually loses charge – even when not in use, Hydrogen storage systems do not. PICEA claims, “If you have a full storage tank from us, it takes 300 years for 1% of the storage volume to be lost.”
Friendly to the environment
When coupled with solar PV or wind turbine, all the hydrogen produced by a Commercial Hydrogen Battery is deemed as a renewable source of energy and is typically called green. The only by-products of producing hydrogen by water electrolysis and using hydrogen in fuel cells, are water and heat. Combined with the longer lifespan, at the end of the Commercial Hydrogen Battery’ life there is very little in the way of polluting E-waste when compared to a typical BESS.
Reduces the cost of maintaining spinning reserve
If the type of business you operate implements spinning reserve, when not required, that reserved power can be diverted to the electrolyser to produce hydrogen. This hydrogen can be used for other purposes or stored ready for conversion back into electricity to help offset the generation required to maintain the desired level of spinning reserve. This eliminates waste and reduces costs.
Reduces waste from curtailment
When your PV or wind turbines are producing more energy than you are able to use at that time, it is wasteful to dump that energy. A Commercial Hydrogen Battery allows you to capture the energy that you would otherwise curtail, store it and use at a time when the wind is not blowing, and the sun is not shinning.
An asset to your business
A Commercial Hydrogen Battery such as the LAVO has 20,000 cycles of charging and supplying power. Designed to last 30 years, the LAVO is a valuable asset that when combined with renewable energy or spinning reserve, will help reduce your energy costs for many years to come.
Low cost of adding additional storage capacity
When storing H2 in a cylinder, the cost of adding more storage capacity is very low when compared to adding additional capacity to a BESS. The lower cost of adding additional storage to a Commercial Hydrogen Battery will help keep costs down as your business grows.
It’s safe
Hydrogen is rarely stored in liquid form. Hydrogen gas has a third of the energy of natural gas per Nm3 and a seventh of the energy of LPG per Nm3. H2 is 14 times lighter than air and hydrogen molecules will combine with other molecules rapidly when exposed to air. In the event of a leak, this means the H2 will dissipate rapidly. For extra safety, Commercial Hydrogen Battery are designed to be installed outdoors.
